Ehai Holds Stakeholders Meeting in Ondo and Ekiti States

Equitable Health Access Initiative in collaboration with State Ministry of Health, State Hospitals Management Board, State Agency for the Control of Aids and State Primary Health Care Development Board held a review meeting with Project Directors on the PEPFAR funded Action Plus Up supported health facilities in Ondo and Ekiti State.The meeting took place at 12th and 13th of May 2015 respectively in both states. Medical Directors, Local Govt. Medical Officers of Health and Officers in Charge of PHCs as well as representatives from SMOH, SACA, HMB and PHCBattended the meeting.
This stakeholders meeting is a routine (bi-annual) meeting aimed at ensuring the HIV prevention care and treatment activities in both states (especially on the Action Plus Up project) runs smoothly. The meeting also provides a strategic and operational platform to address cross cutting issues affecting the HIV program in the states thus strengthening the HIV response in both states.
A total number of fifty-five (55) and forty-three (43) participants were in attendance in Ondo and Ekiti States respectively.
One of the objectives of the meeting was to discuss the new developments on the PEPFAR project, and the paradigm shift of PEPFAR with regards to laboratory investigations since October 2014.

Since October 2014, all other previously supported laboratory investigations such as Chemistry, Haematology, Hepatitis B Surface Antigen and Syphilis Screening are no longer supported. This is in spite of the fact that they have supplied some facilities with Reflotron and Vitros V350 machines to some facilities for chemistry tests and Sysmex machines for haematology assay.

Strategies for addressing this funding gap and its implication on the management of HIV positive patients was discussed extensively. Best practices were shared and solutions were proffered to observed challenges.

The hospitals should begin to charge a commensurate amount of money to HIV positive clients to ensure they are able to procure reagents and carry out necessary maintenance and repairs on the machines.

EHAI should with immediate effect raise a communiqué on these resolutions and share with the Honourable Commissioner Ondo State MOH, Chairman and Permanent Secretary for the Ondo State HMB, SACA Program Manager and the Executive Secretary of the Ondo State PHC Board as well as all Medical Directors and Medical Officers for Health of all ACTION Plus UP supported facilities.
