EHAI, with funding from the Pfizer Foundation’s Global Health Innovative Grant Round 8 (GHIG 8), introduced the groundbreaking Automated Digitalized Immunization System (ADIS). ADIS was developed following extensive co-creation meetings with immunization officers, policymakers, and other stakeholders. The goal was to identify the root causes of zero-dose and under-immunization, which led to the creation of this comprehensive digital solution.
The solution was built on a free, open-source platform accessible via web and mobile devices, and it has digitalized the paper-based National Routine Immunization Registers and Child Health Cards into an Electronic Immunization Register (EIR) with an integrated electronic Antenatal Care (ANC) register, enabling healthcare workers to track pregnant women and seamlessly link newborns to immunization programs. This solution addresses most of the challenges that contribute to the country’s high rates of zero-dose, under-immunization and under-five mortality.
ADIS is currently being piloted in partnership with the Kwara State Primary Healthcare Development Agency across 12 Primary Health Centers (PHCs) and the University of Ilorin Teaching in Ilorin East LGA, Kwara State. The project has successfully digitalized the immunization records for over 20,000 children and has achieved over 60% reduction in missed immunization when compared to paper-based records.
Key features of ADIS include:
To facilitate their interaction with the Electronic Immunization Register (EIR) and the ADIS platform, the pilot project has equipped each PHC immunization officer with one handheld tablet and one solar-powered power bank. This ensures reliable access to the system, even in areas with inconsistent electricity supply, enabling seamless data entry and management in real-time, thus improving efficiency and ensuring accurate and timely immunization records.
