Understanding Health Equity
The concept of health equity goes beyond simply providing equal access to healthcare services. It recognizes that different individuals and groups require different levels of support to achieve the same health outcomes. Health equity is the principle and goal of eliminating avoidable and unjust differences in health status among different populations. It demands that we address structural barriers, social determinants, and systemic inequities that create and perpetuate poor health outcomes, particularly for marginalized and underserved communities. It’s about ensuring everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible.
In Nigeria and other low- and middle-income countries, these challenges are deeply entrenched. From fragmented health systems to inadequate financing to regional disparities in access to care, the obstacles are many. It is within this context that EHAI operates with purpose and urgency.

At EHAI, we envision a world where health equity is a lived reality for all. This vision extends far beyond the traditional confines of healthcare delivery, encompassing a holistic understanding of health influenced by social determinants, including education, income, housing, and environmental quality. We believe that achieving true health equity requires a multifaceted approach that addresses these underlying factors, dismantling the systemic barriers that disproportionately affect marginalized communities.
Our Mission: Action for Equity
Our mission is to deliver high-impact, evidence-informed interventions that improve health outcomes while addressing the root causes of inequity. Through a combination of technical expertise, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, EHAI seeks to build systems that are not only efficient but fair, transparent, and inclusive.
This mission is operationalized across key thematic areas: infectious diseases (HIV, TB, malaria), non-communicable diseases, immunization, digital health, and health systems strengthening, with a growing focus on sustainable health financing through mechanisms such as the National Social Health Insurance Scheme (NSHIS) and community-based models.
Our vision and mission are not merely aspirational, they are a call to action. It inspires us to:
- Drive Transformation of the Healthcare System: We do this by delivering high-impact, evidence-based health interventions that address systemic barriers to healthcare access.
- Strengthen the PHC System: EHAI focuses on leveraging technology and digital innovations to bolster the primary healthcare system to improve efficiency, reach, and accountability. We recognize their critical role as the first point of contact for communities. This includes supporting the training of healthcare professionals, improving infrastructure, strengthening childhood immunization and ensuring the availability of essential medicines.
- Address Social Determinants of Health: Beyond clinical interventions, EHAI actively engages in initiatives that address the social determinants of health. These initiatives include advocating for improved water, sanitation & hygiene practices, promoting educational opportunities, and supporting livelihood programs that enhance economic stability.
- Engage in Capacity Building: EHAI is committed to strengthening the health workforce and local systems through targeted capacity-building initiatives. We invest in continuous professional development for in-service healthcare workers and provide structured internships and skill enhancement programs for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the health sciences, with a particular emphasis on public health. Additionally, we empower local communities by building their capacity to manage, sustain, and take ownership of their health initiatives, fostering resilience, accountability, and long-term impact.
- Promote Research and Advocacy: Through robust operational and clinical research, EHAI generates evidence to inform policy and practice. We actively advocate for policies that promote health equity at local, national, and international levels, bringing the voices of marginalized communities to the forefront.
- Implement Digital Health Solutions: Leveraging technology, EHAI explores and implements digital health solutions to overcome geographical barriers and enhance access to information and services, particularly in remote areas.
- Collaborate with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and State Health Insurance Agencies (SHIA): EHAI drives sustainable health financing through a domesticated hybrid financing model that combines social health insurance with other proven and innovative financing mechanisms, tailored to the Nigerian context. This ensures inclusivity, efficiency, and financial protection, especially for the poor and vulnerable.
- Empower Communities: Working directly with communities, we help to identify their health needs and co-create sustainable solutions.
- Promote Inclusive Healthcare Systems: We continually strive to promote healthcare systems that are culturally competent, accessible, and responsive to the diverse needs of all individuals.
- Foster Collaboration: Recognizing that health equity is a shared responsibility, EHAI actively seeks partnerships with governments, NGOs, research institutions, and community leaders.
