[/fusion_title][fusion_text]
As part of its efforts in contributing to Nigeria achieving Universal Health Coverage through financial risk pooling, EHAI in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and Ondo State Government has identified Ondo West LGA as the pilot LGA for the Community Based Social Health Insurance Program (CBSHIP) in Ondo state. In this regard, a two-day advocacy and Sensitization meeting was held in the LGA. This meeting was held at two levels, on the first day there was a high level Advocacy meeting with the Local Government officials. In attendance at this meeting, which took place at the LGA secretariat on the 13th of July 2015, was the Executive Chairman of the LGA, the Director of Local Government Administration as well as all Heads of Department in the LGA. At this highly successful meeting, the local officials were briefed on the NHIS led universal coverage drive through CBSHIP as well as the role EHAI will play as Technical Facilitators and Project Managers on the Scheme. In his remarks, the Chairman appreciated EHAI’s efforts in contributing to improving healthcare service delivery in the state thereby addressing healthcare needs of the people of Ondo state. He emphasized the importance of health insurance and encouraged his people to take advantage of this opportunity. He also promised his full support and relevant contribution to the CBSHIP. The response from the Honorable Chairman was very encouraging and serves as a pointer to the fact this scheme will record an outstanding success within this LGA.

On day 2, there was a sensitization meeting with all the gatekeepers, including the traditional rulers, opinion leaders, religious leaders and heads of all the artisan groups and traders within the Moferere-Oja community. Highlights of the meeting include an orientation of the participants on the CBSHIP as well as an intensive question and answer session. The community leaders’ response and acceptance of the concept was quite encouraging and the participants left with high expectations and a promise to work within the community and convene an appropriate date for a full community mobilization activity for the scheme with them taking the lead.
CBSHIP is a non-profit health insurance program for a cohesive group of households or individuals (i.e. a community). It is run by its members which comprises individuals in the community. Based on their health needs, they choose their health care benefits. The program provides an opportunity for community members to be directly involved in decisions pertaining to their health including creating a financial pool for risk sharing. This helps to mitigate the hazardous effects of Out of Pocket Expenditure. EHAI has been accredited and certified by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to implement Community Based Social Health Insurance Programs in the Nigeria.
